My old Newfoundland has likes to lay across the hallway between mine and my wife’s offices . This would normally not be of note except that she is 110#, over 6 feet when standing on her back legs and has a counter height nose when on all fours. When she sprawls she becomes quite an obstacle and since she’s 10 and a half has arthritis so we feel bad making her move so just gingerly step around her.
Recently she’s started to lay like this pressed against the wall looking like my hallway is a MC Escher painting and is about to jump off the wall. It makes me laugh every time I see her like this.
Nothing else to report this morning Oppo - just sharing the randomness of my day at the moment.

She started doing it this weekend and the first time I came across her I laughed for minutes straight and she just gave me some side eye and didn’t move.

For a second, I thought that was a pile of fur that I have building up in the corner of my kitchen. It gave me a bit of a startle this morning when I walked into the kitchen mildly awake for coffee.
Mine’s about the same age and I just notice limping in a front leg. I assume it’s arthritis. Maybe I’ll take her to the vet at some point. Dogs getting old sucks. It’s even worse with big dogs. They’re
harder to lift and help
.

I think your dog’s gravity glitched, try turning her off and then on again.

Hairy dogs do require a lot of upkeep, I have to sweep and vacuum every day to keep it even remotely under control.
Dogs getting old do suck indeed. Ours has already lived nearly 2 years longer than her breed usually does so we're lucky. We had a St Bernard that didn't make it past 7.

Strange doggo thread!

That really sucks. Malamutes that I’ve had usually go 12-14 years. For fairly big dogs.

I love the look on her face there!

Yeah, these giant breed dogs like the St Bernard, Newfoundland, great pyren ees , mastiff and such usually don’t make it past 9 or 10 . She’s a healthy and fit dog from a sheep herder so she isn’t full blood and is very much healthier because of that but she’s still gigantic. We took her for a check-up about 6 months ago and outside the arthritis she’s in good shape for her age , sadly not planning on years left with her though.
They’re usually very good dogs with excellent temperaments but as they’re so large they don’t live as long as others.

That sheep herding probably helped her a lot. I should be walking mine a lot more.
I’ve encountered a few Pyrenees and they are very friendly
dogs. Until
they feel they need to be on
guard. Malamutes also have excellent temperaments but with
zero, probably negative
guarding instinct.

She never was a sheep herder, but her parents and siblings were. She loved to run, but since she’s getting old now can’t take longer than a 15 minute walk anymore.
I love herding dogs - they’re fiercely loyal, very protective of children, generally laid back and friendly until they deem you a threat. Then it's big bark and teeth bared until you decide to back off.

That’s a another point about big dogs. I was hiking 8 miles with her and it was hot but she just laid down. Wouldn’t move for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, I’m thinking I cannot carry an 80lb dog four miles back to the car. No more long hikes.
The laid back but protective is a good combination. Malamutes are laid back and friendly to everyone unfortunately. No guard instincts, no warning me that there is
a stranger is in the drive
way or at the door. Or even in the house! That part would be nice to have.

That’s definitely an unpleasant and worrying walk.
Herding dogs are a special bunch, but as they’re protecting the property too will do things like wake you up when there is a deer in the front yard in the middle of the night so it’s not all positive.
When she passes we’ll take a break before we get another but I think it’ll be another herding dog.

It’s like becoming a Ford or Chevy or BMW or whatever fanboy. I’m now stuck with getting Malamutes (or Northern /Spitz breeds) like you with herding breeds.
I did have a husky/lab mix that was a
good watch dog.

Beautiful Pups! I’ve not seen a brown landseer before, that’s gorgeous.
When ours was 5 months old she was still gaining 5 pounds a week, just a fun ball of rapidly growing fluff at that point.
Luckily for us she has pretty tight jowls so doesn’t constantly drool. She does of course constantly shed though!

Our big one sheds 24/7 and drools bowl fulls. Little one isn’t bad at all. Our Subaru plates are NEWFARU
